Reed Academy namesake Celebrates 100th birthday

Ruby Reed, the namesake of Aldine ISD’s Reed Academy, recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mrs. Reed celebrated a century of life on earth on April 5. Family members and friends gathered at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse on Saturday, April 7, to help her celebrate the historic occasion.

Mrs. Reed was born on April 5, 1907 in Montgomery County. She devoted 28 years to the students of Aldine ISD after serving in Magnolia ISD and Houston ISD prior to joining the Aldine district in 1941. Mrs. Reed began her teaching career in Aldine at White Oak School before moving to George Washington Carver Elementary School. After serving as a second- and fourth-grade teacher at Carver Elementary, she was named principal of that school in 1958. Mrs. Reed remained the school’s principal until her retirement in 1969.

Mrs. Reed is the mother of three children, all of whom reside in Houston, 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.
