Campus Spotlight:  Stevens Elementary

Raymond Stubblefield, Principal at Stephens Elementary, believes that INVEST has increased opportunities for all aspects of teaching at his campus and has brought about a heightened awareness to all staff about professional conversations. He’s particularly excited about a new clarity on ‘best practices’ that seems to be developing among professionals.

The new system has brought about a differentiated and deeper level of support for new teachers due to the level of increased walk-throughs and conversations. All first year teachers at Stephens go through the evaluation process with him, which provides an even added depth of support and guidance.

One successful strategy that Mr. Stubblefield has implemented at Stephens Elementary is presenting case studies at staff meetings that offer scenarios relative to specific components. Teachers can see these scenarios and then discuss what was effective or ineffective about the teaching practice. He has also created systems and strategies relevant to his campus to make sure they are handling the implementation in a timely way. By doing so, teachers are able to see the process as a whole, helping them understand the potential benefits from such an integrated appraisal system. Comments he has heard from his staff about positive aspects of INVEST include, ‘the process is very transparent’ and ‘evaluations are subjective and not based on perceptions thanks to the specific rubrics and attributes used in observations‘.

Mr. Stubblefield noted that INVEST has brought back to the surface an understanding that students should take responsibility for learning and assisting their peers. For example, moving from ‘teacher communication’ to ‘students in charge of communicating’, helps the students become an integral part of the learning process.
